The Opportunity

This is an exciting time to be a part of the HCCC community. In 2021, the College launched its Strategic Plan, the culmination of which, aligns with the College’s 50th anniversary in 2024. The College was recognized by the Association of Community College Trustees as the recipient of the 2021 ACCT Northeast Region Equity Award. HCCC has recently been named one of 101 recipients, 1 of only 7 community colleges to be distinguished for the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. HCCC’s Culinary Arts Institute was ranked as the #6 Culinary Arts program in the United States by Best Choice Schools.  Most recently, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) selected HCCC as one of twenty-four colleges nationwide to be named a “2022 Most Promising Place to Work in Community Colleges.” The Bellwether College Consortium has named HCCC a Top Ten Finalist in all three program categories for the nationally recognized 2023 Bellwether Awards: Instructional Programs and Services; Workforce Development; and Planning, Governance, and Finance. HCCC is one of only two colleges in the United States to be invited to compete in all three categories.

 

Overview

Hudson County Community College serves one of the most ethnically diverse and densely populated communities in the United States. The College is a vibrant, urban institution of higher education whose mission is to provide its diverse communities with inclusive, high-quality educational programs and services that promote student success and upward social and economic mobility.

More than 90% of HCCC’s students receive scholarships, grants, and loans to finance their education, and the College’s extensive financial aid program helps connect students with the resources they need. To date, the College’s Foundation has raised over $3.5 million for student scholarships, and HCCC ranks first in the state of New Jersey for its award of Community College Opportunity Grant funds. About half of its more than 12,000 credit students identify as Hispanic, and more than 33% of all students were born outside of the U.S. In 2021, HCCC had two students selected from a national applicant pool to receive the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

Hudson County Community College has three campuses. The largest campus is located at the heart of Jersey City’s Journal Square, which is approximately 20 minutes from New York City. The College has a North Hudson Campus, located in Union City, New Jersey and an additional location at the Hudson County Schools of Technology in Secaucus, New Jersey. The College offers 70 degree and certificate programs and more than 300-day, evening, and weekend courses throughout its three-campus network.

The Culinary Arts Institute features state-of-the-art facilities and a hands-on program that prepares students for a range of careers in the hospitality industry. The Nursing Program includes a theoretical base of general education and science courses together with a range of nursing theory and practical courses designed to prepare graduates to be eligible for the New Jersey State Licensure Examination for Registered Professional Nurses (NCLEX–RN).

Position Summary / Job Description

Salary Grade: 103

Hours for this position will be 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM.

This position plays a supportive role as a member of the Safety and Security Dept. team, under the supervision of the Security Director or his designee. Associate is responsible for assisting the Security Dept. including all in house position in day-to-day operations including but not limited to; supervising the outsourced Security Officers; investigating incidents / emergency situations; perform overall responsible protective and Security work to maintain and ensure the safety and security of the students, faculty, and staff as well as all college property while adhering to established rules, regulations, and College laws; and conduct surveillance of college buildings grounds and activities.

 

Required / Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to interact with a culturally diverse population and to effectively and respectfully function and communicate within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.

 

Education and Experience

High School Diploma required with a minimum of five (5) years of practical work experience in the Safety and Security industry, operations, and activities in a higher educational setting. Technical training/ certification required. Prior supervisor experience highly preferred to coordinate the activities of an outsourced Security staff.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Broad knowledge of public safety, federal, state, and local safety & compliance regulations, protocols, and procedures required with the ability to identify, address, and resolve routine to complex safety and security incidents. Effective investigative and problem-solving skills required. Excellent report-writing skills required. Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills to work and communicate with a multi-cultural community and to interact with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and representatives. Multitasking and time management skills required. Ability to think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under emergency situations; ability to speak in a clear, understandable manner and comprehend/explain various types of information. Ability to operate emergency and security equipment. Proficient in various computer software programs; e.g., MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, etc. Valid NJ driver's license and CPR/AED certification required.

 

Physical Requirements

Significant standing; some walking, running, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling; ability to lift 50 lbs. Possess physical and metal stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. Essential Responsibilities

  1. Support the overall safety and security operations and activities for the college to ensure the 24/7 safety and security of students, employees, faculty, and visitors to all college campus locations, grounds and surrounding areas:

    • Operates central control security system platform.
    • Operates and maintain entire video surveillance system.
    • Oversees the operation of ID card system and responsible for inventory of supplies.
    • Ensures a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff.
    • Responds, investigates, documents, and reports to all incidents on campus including suspicious activities, routine and emergency situations; e.g. burglaries, thefts, assaults, drug use, motor vehicle accidents, etc. for all campuses.
    • Responsible for typing all handwritten reports in order to maintain legibility and submit to Security Managers/Coordinators for final approval.
    • Adheres to internal policies and procedures established by the College.
    • Assist Security Managers, Coordinators and Director as instructed.
    • Projects a positive self-image of technical skills, professionalism, appearance, confidentiality, courtesy, conduct, honesty, fairness, loyalty, and personal integrity at all times.
    • Perform required related work as instructed.
    • Support Security Managers/Coordinators in maintaining and ensuring compliance of all documents and routine maintenance in respect to College Security Fleet Vehicles; e.g. Vehicle Registration, Insurance card, Inspection in accordance with state and local regulations and College policies and procedures.
    • Schedule flexibility in order to facilitate coverage when needed.
    • Trains, disciplines, and makes recommendations for continuation of employment for all out-sourced Security personnel.
    • Interacts with faculty, staff, and students regarding security functions.
    • Assist Managers/Coordinators in key management systems.
  2. Provides direction and Supervision to outsourced Security personnel.

    • Provides ongoing leadership, advice, training, and guidance to outsourced Security personnel.
    • Conducts and attends outsourced Security staff meetings to promote a constant flow of information, knowledge sharing, and to keep out­sourced Security personnel informed.
    • Continually assesses the performance and skill base of all outsourced security personnel; assists Security Managers/Coordinators with interviews for potential hires.
  3. Assists in the overseeing and inspection of work completed by external contractors to ensure overall quality adherence to project deadlines, and the documentation and recordkeeping of all work completed.
  4. Remains current on new or changing laws, regulations, compliance requirements, etc., specific to safety and security operations and daily activities.
