Transitional Opportunity Program

Mission

The Transitional Opportunity Program (TOP) provides a faster path to college-level courses for new students who place into developmental courses and continuing students who have difficulty exiting the developmental or ESL sequences. It accomplishes this by offering no-cost, alternative programs to improve placement test scores, bring students to college-ready level, and save your financial aid dollars to pay for college-level courses.

Why TOP?

TOP offers current students Enrichment Programs for all levels of ESL, Basic Reading/Basic Writing, Basic Mathematics, and Basic Algebra. The Summer Bridge Program and Refresher Academy courses help high school and new students who place into Basic Reading/Basic Writing, Basic Mathematics, and Basic Algebra classes make the transition to college-level classes. At the end of the program, students are provided an opportunity to retake the level test, exit exams, Accuplacer test, or other tests as approved by each department involved.

  • Image with graphic of a path to be college ready.
  • A FREE program to help students who did not exit Basic Reading/Writing, Basic Math, and Basic Algebra during the Spring 2021 semester. Students will be tested at the end of the program.
  • A FREE enrichment program for ESL students (Levels 0-3) who did not pass the Writing Level Test and ESL 4 students who did not pass their exams during the Spring 2021. Students will be tested at the end of the program.
  • These FREE programs
are designed for new students who have
self-placed in College Composition I
(ENG-101) and/or College Algebra
(MAT-100) and wish to refresh and improve
their basic skills. Attending these classes will
help students to familiarize themselves with
HCCC, review basic skills, and build confidence.
Students will have an improved chance to
obtain a higher course grade and move
faster toward graduation. The courses are
not designed to change or improve your
initial placement, but to increase your
chances to pass your classes in the Fall and
with a better grade.
