NameCoach
Hudson County Community College is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels that they belong. One way this begins is by ensuring that your name is pronounced correctly. To assist with this, HCCC offers NameCoach, a name pronunciation tool which is available in Canvas, the college’s Learning Management System.
What is NameCoach?
NameCoach is an easy-to-use tool that allows students and faculty to record how their name should be pronounced, while being able to find the same information for others.
How To Record Your Name
The simplest way is as follows:
- Log in to Canvas (hccc.instructure.com).
- Click Account on the Canvas menu (the top-most option on the green bar menu to the left).
- Click NameCoach Recording.
- If this is your first time, click on Record Name. If you are re-recording your name, click Edit Your Info.
- Record your name as per the on-screen instructions.
- Most will choose the Web Recorder option, but there is also an option to have NameCoach call your phone to capture your recording.
- Click Submit and Finish to save your recording.
- Your recording will be saved for all your courses!
Where will your NameCoach name pronunciation appear?
In every Canvas course, NameCoach is an option on the Course Menu. From there you can record or re-record your name and you can listen to the recordings made by your classmates! Your recording will be available in all your Canvas courses, both current and going forward.

Faculty and NameCoach
HCCC is committed to being inclusive and we know you want to create inclusive classrooms and learning spaces. We hope that with NameCoach, you will have a tool to help you ensure that your students feel acknowledged and respected. NameCoach is enabled in all Canvas course shells in the course menu.
- Get an early start: We encourage you to review your NameCoach tab prior to the first day of classes. This will help you practice the pronunciation of your student’s name, ensuring a first day of classes that is intentionally inclusive.
- Encourage your students to use NameCoach: Once a student records their name, it is uploaded to all current and future courses they are in. It is a one-and-done, easy task.
- Provide us with feedback! As you use this tool, please provide us with feedback. Have you used NameCoach in your class? How did it go? Email colFREEHUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE to share thoughts and experiences.
Instructors can send an email to students who have not yet recorded their names:
- In your course page, click NameCoach.
- Click on the Unrecorded Names tab to view the students who have not recorded their name.
- Click Remind All or click the envelope icon to send to an individual student.
Instructors can create a NameCoach Assignment following these directions from NameCoach. Alternatively, you can import a Module created by the Center for Online Learning from the Commons:
- Click Commons (on the green Canvas Menu to the left).
- Search using the terms: hccc namecoach.
- Select the Graded or Ungraded module.
- Click Import and checkmark the target course(s).
- Modify the Assignment as you wish.
