Dr. Egan has spent most of his life in diverse, urban higher education settings. He began his higher education as an immigrant and first-generation college student at The Cooper Union in lower Manhattan. He began graduate studies in the Humanities while working as a Verizon engineer, eventually enrolling full time in the English doctoral program at City University of New York. During his graduate studies he taught at Queens College and received fellowships to advance CUNY’s writing across the curriculum. His dissertation research focused on how Walt Whitman, and other New York City-based writers, wrote about the meaning of democracy in the 19th century.

Dr. Egan contributes to the Achieving the Dream efforts to improve student success. He is the faculty advisor to HCCC’s student newspaper, The Orator.
