Catherina Mirasol - Founder and Consultant, Project 5356
Associates in Science, Nursing, 2010

Catherina Mirasol's connection to Hudson County Community College runs deep. She joined the HCCC staff in 2006, and while building her career there, simultaneously earned her A.S. in Nursing, graduating cum laude and as a proud member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Rising from Administrative Assistant to Director of Continuing Education & Workforce Development, Catherina helped transform a division by building a team from 10 to 40+ strong that together secured over $2 million in grants, opening doors for countless students in workforce trainings. She was also selected for HCCC's inaugural Workforce Leadership Academy cohort in partnership with The Aspen Institute. In October 2024, she launched Project 5356, partnering with nonprofits on the full grants' lifecycle: from crafting winning proposals and managing awards to cultivating donor relationships that last, helping organizations tell their stories and secure the funding they need to thrive. A Jersey City native with a B.A. from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Catherina has never been afraid to reinvent herself. From hospital registration to accounts payable, medical billing to nursing, and ultimately launching her own nonprofit consulting practice, she is living proof that the education you invest in can circle back and lift everyone around you.

50 Faces of Alumni

"As a single mother working full-time enrolled in one of the toughest degree programs, I did not have time to do much else. Fortunately, my nursing group was tight knit. I loved the friendships I made, and we still keep in touch."

What resources or support services (e.g., tutoring, counseling, career services) did you find most helpful?

I received a lot of guidance and support from the administration and faculty. I really felt like they were invested in my success.

Were you involved in any student organizations, clubs, or leadership roles?

I wish! As a single mother working full-time enrolled in one of the toughest degree programs, I did not have time to do much else. Fortunately, my nursing group was tight knit. My only social time during that period was study groups and breaks during lectures and clinicals. I loved the friendships I made, and we still keep in touch.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during your time at community college?

My biggest challenge was childcare and balancing my life between work, school, and being a mom. Sadly, it was in that order, and I suffered from big "Mom Guilt" from having very little time to spend with my child who was only 5-6 years old at the time. I was fortunate to have a strong support system for my family and friends.
