Smart Technologies Specialist at Veolia
Associate Degree in Criminal Justice

Martin Okoro is a Smart Technologies Specialist at Veolia, the world’s largest water services firm, and a proud graduate of Hudson County Community College, Class of 2023. As a Smart Technologies Specialist, he works at the intersection of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Data Analytics. He earned his A.S. in Environmental Science and participated in the Water Workforce Utility Program (WWUP), leading to an internship at Veolia and ultimately a full-time position. As a member of the Hudson Scholars program, Martin gained valuable support and resources that helped him balance his academic and professional goals. After completing his associate degree at HCCC, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Southern New Hampshire University ahead of schedule and while working full time. He is now pursuing a master’s in Data Analytics. Martin credits HCCC with providing the academic foundation and career preparation that launched his journey in the water utility and environmental technology field. Martin advises students looking to follow in his footsteps to not be afraid of getting their hands dirty and to invest in learning skills in scripting, data analysis, and geospatial tools as these are becoming increasingly important as utilities become more digitized.

50 Faces of Alumni
“My Hudson experience was excellent; it helped build the self-discipline and motivation to thrive in any environment.”

How would you describe the quality of education you received?

The quality of education at Hudson County Community College was excellent. The courses were well-structured, and the faculty went beyond teaching — they took time to mentor, explain real-world applications, and ensure students truly understood the material. My professors in the Environmental Science program were especially supportive, creating a learning environment that was both rigorous and encouraging. The combination of academic quality and personal guidance truly prepared me for the next stages of my education and career.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during your time at community college?

My biggest challenge was balancing school with work and personal responsibilities. Since many of my classes were online, maintaining self-discipline and managing time effectively took effort. However, the support from the Hudson Scholars program, Continuing Education and Workforce Development staff, and my professors helped me stay on track and overcome those challenges.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out at a community college?

Take full advantage of the resources available — tutoring, the library, career services, and supportive staff. Build relationships with your professors and mentors early on, because they genuinely want to see you succeed. Stay consistent, ask for help when needed, and remember that community college can be a powerful first step toward achieving your long-term goals.
