Hudson County Community College Celebrates Jersey City Inaugural Poet Laureate Rashad Wright

Mr. Wright’s poem, “Art in Cadence,” now on exhibit; the poet will read his works at a special in-person performance on February 11.
February 1, 2022, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Department of Cultural Affairs highlights the transformational power of the written word with the installation of Rashad Wright’s poem, “Art in Cadence.” The work by the 2020 Inaugural Poet Laureate of Jersey City may be viewed Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 4 p.m. in the sixth-floor Atrium of the Gabert Library, 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City.
In addition, the College will host a live performance of Mr. Wright reading his works on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 3 p.m. in the Gabert Library Atrium. All guests must practice social distancing and wear a mask.

Rashad Wright is one of New Jersey’s most talented writers. A Dodge Poetry Foundation and New Jersey City University graduate, he has performed at Hudson County Community College on many occasions, and hosted weekly, virtual open-mic sessions throughout the pandemic. Last February he delivered a memorable and emotional poetry performance during the College’s Tamika Palmer event, and worked closely with Professor Dorothy Andersen’s history class, inspiring students to use history as a creative outlet. He was also featured in a two-person exhibit presented by the Monira Foundation in Spring 2021.
“Art in Cadence” was originally created for a 2020 exhibition in partnership with Art Fair 14C. However, due to COVID-19, the exhibition was canceled. The 30-line, free-verse poem is rich with metaphors that humanize objects, inspire the downtrodden, and empower all.
The “Art in Cadence” installation may be viewed free of charge by all who visit HCCC. Visitors must check-in at the Gabert Library Security desk, and observe the College’s COVID-19 safety guidelines – masks are mandatory.
