Hudson County Community College to Host Live Webex Event, Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas

October 2, 2020, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, in partnership with the HCCC Office of Student Life and Leadership, invites students, teachers, and community members to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a video screening and discussion of Afro-Latino culture and identity on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested may register for the live Webex event at www.tinyurl.com/hhm20.

 

Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas

Kim Haas, Executive Producer, creator and host of the new groundbreaking Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) travel series, Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas, will present episode clips spotlighting the historical and cultural contributions of African descendants from Latin America. She will also lead an interactive discussion about the benefits of positive, inspirational images of Afro-Latinos; what it means to be Afro-Latino; how history and culture enlighten and strengthen humanity; and the Afro-Latino role in the development and growth of Latin America.

“We are introducing participants to Afro-Latinos and their profound legacy in the Americas through history, culture, cuisine, art, dance, music, environmental conservation, literature, sports, and festivals,” Ms. Haas said. “Afro-Latino Travels is about Black joy, pride and resilience despite centuries of oppression and under-representation.”

Ms. Haas, who speaks fluent Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, has been active in Afro-Latino issues for more than a decade. The founder of the blog, losafrolatinos.com, she served as Director of Marketing for WWSI TV Telemundo, and as an on-camera pledge host in English, Spanish and Italian for WYBE TV in Philadelphia. Ms. Haas is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
