November 8, 2019, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) student Avery Tan has been presented with the Educational Opportunity Fund Professional Association of New Jersey (EOFPANJ) Arrigo O. Rogers Scholarship. Mr. Tan was recognized at an EOFPANJ ceremony at William Paterson University on Friday, November 1, 2019.

“This is a great honor for Avery and the College,” said HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber. “Avery is the first HCCC student to be awarded this scholarship, and one of just two community college students in New Jersey to receive the scholarship this year. The Arrigo O. Rogers Memorial Scholarship Award was established in remembrance of Arrigo Rogers, a graduate of the EOF program and an exceptional leader. EOF scholars are required to have completed 24 college credits, have earned a cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 or higher, and be enrolled in the EOF Program. They must also demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and be actively involved in EOF activities.

A first-generation college student and America Needs You Fellow, Mr. Tan is dedicated to hard work, leadership, and academic success. Working to attain his Associate in Science degree in Health Sciences, Mr. Tan holds a 3.7 cumulative grade-point average, and was named to the Fall 2019 Dean’s List. He serves as President of The Alliance of EOF Students of New Jersey, is a HCCC Peer Leader, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Chi Alpha Epsilon honor societies, and a HCCC Student Government Association Senator.

In addition to his studies, Mr. Tan is employed as a transport assistant for Beloved Community Charter School in Jersey City, where he aids students with disabilities and provides positive reinforcement to students with behavioral issues. He also volunteers with the College’s food pantry, Jersey Cares, and Friends of Liberty State Park.

“We congratulate Avery on this great honor. He exemplifies the commitment and spirit of our students,” Dr. Reber said.
