The prestigious award recognizes individuals who are making a difference in the lives of students in the classroom and beyond.

March 19, 2024, Jersey City, NJ – HCCC Associate Professor and Coordinator of Business Programs Elana Winslow has been awarded Dale P. Parnell Faculty Distinction Recognition by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

The prestigious award, named in honor of former AACC President and CEO Dale P. Parnell, recognizes individuals making a difference in community college classrooms nationwide.

Recipients of the faculty distinction recognition demonstrate passion for students and show a willingness to support them both inside and outside of the classroom. They also participate in college committees and go above and beyond what is required to ensure students succeed academically.

Dean of Business, Culinary Arts, and Hospitality Management Ara Karakashian noted that award criteria describe Professor Winslow perfectly, as she is no stranger to going above and beyond to put HCCC students in a position to succeed. An important member of the HCCC family for the past 14 years, Elana spearheaded the development of the College’s A.S. degree program in Business Administration and multiple courses in various modalities. She also led the creation of the College’s Business Internship program, which she coordinates. Professor Winslow works closely with the Year Up program, which introduces students to internships and potential employment opportunities with major corporations. Through these and other endeavors, Professor Winslow helps HCCC students embark on exciting careers in fields including finance, logistics, human resource management, sales, marketing, and more.

Professor Winslow is a strong believer in the value of introducing students to opportunities outside the classroom. She has accompanied HCCC students to iconic American institutions, financial hubs, and businesses such as the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Reserve, New York State Court, Bloomberg Headquarters, and an Amazon processing facility. She has also forged departmental partnerships with four-year institutions including Rutgers University, St. Peter’s University, and New Jersey City University, and leads HCCC student visits to these universities.

On being recognized with this distinction, Professor Winslow stated, “I want to thank the HCCC administration, especially Dr. Reber and Dr. Darryl Jones for their encouragement, kindness, guidance, and strong leadership.  I owe much to the mentoring I received over the last 14 years at HCCC, most notably from Dr. Ara Karakashian and the late Paul Dillon, my mentors and role models.  I share this recognition with my wonderful dean and my School of Business, Culinary Arts, and Hospitality Management colleagues. I also share this recognition with the thousands of inspirational students I have been fortunate to teach over the years! It is an honor to have had a small role in their journeys.”

HCCC President Chris Reber stated, “We congratulate Professor Elana Winslow for receiving the 2024 Dale P. Parnell Faculty Distinction Recognition. She is a highly respected and valued member of our College community. Her tireless efforts both inside and outside the classroom exemplify the values of excellence and commitment that we strive to instill at HCCC."

Professor Winslow holds a B.S. in Marketing from Yeshiva University and an MBA in Operations Management and Global Business from Rutgers University.
