Hudson County Community College to Present 2019 Heritage Award to WomenRising

The award will be presented at the HCCC Commencement Ceremonies on May 30.

 

May 28, 2019, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will recognize the life-changing work of WomenRising with the 2019 HCCC Heritage Award. The award will be presented to WomenRising’s Executive Director, Sr. Roseann Mazzeo, S.C.

The award presentation will take place during the College’s 42nd Annual Commencement Ceremonies on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ. The College will graduate more than 1,380 students that evening. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will deliver the Commencement keynote address.

WomenRising

 

Founded in 1905, WomenRising is the foremost community-based organization for women in Hudson County. The organization assists women and families to achieve self-sufficiency, and live safe, productive and fulfilling lives through advocacy, social services and economic development.

WomenRising provides crisis intervention, supportive counseling, family support services, a supportive housing program, and a job training and resource center. The organization believes that advocacy and information are integral to assist individuals and families to understand their rights and responsibilities and to access the appropriate resources toward self-sufficiency.

Hudson County Community College collaborates with WomenRising in the highly successful Community Partnerships in Hotel Employment program, which provides job training and placement in the hospitality industry. The two organizations also partner on an Annual Vigil for Domestic Violence awareness hosted at the college.

Instituted 26 years ago, the HCCC Heritage Award honors individuals and organizations from Hudson County whose work significantly impact the community. Past recipients include Hudson Pride Center; former HCCC Vice President for Development Joseph D. Sansone; former New Jersey City University Professor Dr. Howard Parish; educator and entrepreneur Joseph Michael Napolitano, Sr.; Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, SILVERMAN principal Paul Silverman; former HCCC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Abegail Douglas-Johnson; Union City science teacher Nadia Makar; Pastor and Overseer of Mt. Sinai Full Baptist Church Mother Jacqueline Mays; United Way of Hudson County President Daniel Altilio; Hudson County business leader Raju Patel; and retired Jersey Journal publisher Scott Ring.
