Introduction to Intelligent Transportation Systems

NSF Advanced Technical Education Award

HCCC is proud to announce the Construction Management program has received an Advanced Technology Education grant award of $300,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have impacted the transportation industry with technologies that Bring Intelligence into transportation systems to help manage and improve efficiency, mobility, safety, and equity. Real-time monitoring of critical components of transportation systems is essential for effective management. Real-time, accurate, and precise traffic and roadway information not only assist in making user decision for convenience of best travel time but also impact safety and security. For primary service responders, these decisions often can make a difference between life and death.

The course is ideal for engineers pursuing professional development in ITS. It provides technical explanations and descriptions in a simple and non-complex manner of the fundamentals of infusing Intelligence and “Smarts” in Transportation Systems. Intelligence and smart devices in transportation systems are among the most rapidly evolving areas, especially after the rapidly increasing number of smart and connected vehicles (Tesla and like).

After the course's successful conclusion, the participants will receive an Intelligent Transportation Systems - Professional Development Continuing Education certificate of completion.

Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes:

  • Understand the basic concepts of ITS, role, responsibilities, benefits, and advantages in transportation systems.
  • Evaluate Mobily, Equity, and Safety issues in a hypothetical existing condition of extremely congested urbanized areas.
  • Recommend Mitigation to address the congestion to make travel and mobility safe and reliable.
  • Role play as Planner, Designer, and Operator of ITS System.
