Course Types

Hudson County Community College is committed to student success both inside and outside of the classroom. In order to assist students in making progress towards their academic goals, HCCC offers classes in a variety of modalities (course modality refers to how a course is offered by the instructor), including online, hybrid, and remote. Students are encouraged to figure out which mode is the right fit for them before registering.

The different modalities are described below. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Center for Online Learning (colFREEHUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE). Among the other offices that can advise you on course modalities are Enrollment Services (admissionsFREEHUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE) and Advising (advisingFREElive.HUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE).

Online Learning FAQs

Q: How do I know if a course is offered online?
A: Not every course is offered online. Online course sections will have an ON designation, for example ENG-101-ONA01. (Note: Hybrid courses have an HY designation for the section.)

Tip: To filter for online sections, when searching the online course schedule, use the Advanced Search tab and select “On-Line” in the Location field.

Q: What if I am new to online learning?
A: The Center for Online Learning has developed an introductory Orientation to Online Learning at HCCC. The Orientation consists of six bite-sized videos that provide an overview of Canvas functionality and navigation. We encourage everyone to watch it whether you are in an online, hybrid, or face-to-face course. Registered students can access it via the “Get Help” option in Canvas, or click this link now to watch the Orientation.

Students in online and hybrid courses are also automatically enrolled in a more extensive self-paced Hudson Online orientation, which will appear on your Canvas Dashboard. You are encouraged to spend time in it.

Q: What kind of support is available?
A: Online students at HCCC are well-supported for success! Here are some of our support services:

  • Canvas Support: Telephone and chat support is available 24/7. The Student Hotline phone number is 833-225-1548. If you forget the phone number, or prefer a live chat, you can access either by clicking the “Get Help” icon on the green navigation bar that runs down the left side of Canvas.
  • Tutoring Support: Having trouble with an online assignment? You can schedule an online academic support session, and work with someone one-on-one. This is a free service, available by clicking Smarthinking Online Tutoring in your Canvas course.
  • Computer Support: The IT Help Desk will assist you with computer and login issues (360-4310; itshelpFREEHUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE).
