Fundamentals of Signing and Stripping

This course provides an overview of the signs, pavement striping, and markings used to manage and regulate traffic on various roadways. It covers the methods for conveying instructions to motorists and pedestrians, ensuring safety and efficiency across Federal, State, County, Municipal, and Local systems. While these controls generally follow MUTCD standards, local jurisdictions have some flexibility to adapt them.

Student Learning Outcomes/objectives (SLO):

Upon successful course completion, students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts involved in developing and maintaining a uniform method as outlined in the MUTCD.
  • Analyze and interpret data related to design, construction, and maintenance issues that require the use of MUTCD.
  • Perform basic calculations and apply rules of thumb for installing and providing traffic control using signs and markings.
  • Apply critical thinking and quantitative reasoning to basic engineering projects.
  • Identify locations and situations for the application of traffic control devices in engineering projects using hypothetical conditions.
