Description

The Science and Mathematics Program with Biology option is designed for students who wish to complete a bachelor's degree or higher in a science. It permits students to tailor a program to suit their individual goals. Students who have not decided on a field of specialization may explore various biological sciences. Others who intend to transfer into specialized programs such as pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pharmacy, chiropractic, physical therapy or other allied health fields can begin with this program.

Additional Program Information

Upon successful completion of the Biology A.S. Program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and application of broad-based concepts in biology.
  2. Identify and classify biodiversity and natural resources and describe the effects of humans on these resources.
  3. Apply the scientific method to generate and test hypotheses by conceiving and performing experiments in broad-based concepts in biology.
  4. Evaluate and interpret quantitative data using the scientific method.
  5. Communicate knowledge and apply understanding of basic biological principles both in writing and in oral presentation.
  6. Describe living systems, including their nature, organization and evolution.
  7. Describe how human activities affect the living world and the physical environment.
  8. Describe the flow of energy and matter within and among organisms.
  9. Explain the basic human inheritance, cell cycle, DNA structure and replication.
  10. Evaluate information by discriminating between science and non-science.
  11. Practice safety and proper techniques in the laboratory such as DNA extraction, western, southern and northern blotting, Gel electrophoresis.
