Films are cool. Social Justice is important. So let’s combine the two. By doing so we can experience the critical details that make up the various social justice that impact American life. Social justice issues live all around us. They are a critical part of our realities. Social justice is the work which aims to equalize access to all society has to offer. It includes access to basics such as protections of life, property, security and health, but also to opportunities for growth and self-determination like education, love and work. Our world is now more active in social justice than ever before, mostly because of our increased ability to communicate, collected data and spread information. Since social justice issues and work now plays such an important role in our societies and experiences- this course offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more using the power of films.

Films are powerful ways to communicate all the important social justice issues in a way that delivers the details they deserve. Many social justice issues are misunderstood or simplified because the details about the problems, the actors, the victims and the power struggles are left out. Films, however, can beautifully seems those details together into a whole experience that leaves us moved and better able to incorporate those stories into our realities. The hope for all social justice victims/issues is to be visible and films offer a wonderful way to deliver visibility. As we move through selected films we will gain more exposure to each specific issue but we will also be able to compare actors and strategies between issues. These films will educate and move you.

We will all need these discussions to reflect on what we experienced and learned.

We will use Google Classroom page for all work and communication. You will have two scheduled Zoom sessions (Zoom is a video conference app). Both of these platforms are free and easy to use. You will be invited to join Google Classroom about a week before class starts. Check your junk mailbox, as invitations to join Google Classroom sometimes end up there. Please make sure you register for the course with a valid email address, since this is where you will receive an invitation notification to join Google Classroom. Your email has to be Google Classroom compatible, so it’s best if you use gmail, hotmail or yahoo. If you do not receive a notification, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact us.

There is NO pre-assignment for the online class. You might however be asked by your instructor, a few days in advance, to prepare a little bit for the first zoom meeting. The course syllabus, all readings and assignments will be posted on Google Classroom before the first zoom meeting.

You will attend the Zoom sessions by going to and clicking “Join Meeting.” You will then enter a meeting ID number that will be provided to you. You can join via a computer, iPad or phone!
